Crown Holdings, Inc. is a leading global supplier of rigid packaging products to consumer marketing companies, as well as transit and protective packaging products, equipment, and services to a broad range of end markets. Within this expansive organization, Jeff Burroughs serves as the Health and Safety Manager in the CAP (Closures, Aerosols, and Promotional Packaging) division at the Lancaster, Ohio facility. Crown Cork’s CAP division includes around seven or eight different plants, manufacturing caps for a variety of well-known brands. Jeff has been with Crown Cork for about two years, and his primary role involves ensuring the health and safety of the workforce.
Jeff shared how Crown Cork and Seal is using Rise Vision digital signage as a way to enhance safety and workplace culture in a manufacturing environment.
Crown Cork faced challenges in effectively communicating with their deskless workers, who make up a considerable portion of their workforce. Traditional methods of communication, such as bulletin boards and static whiteboards, were proving inadequate.
Jeff described the issue that many organizations face when they only share static information: workers walk by the same board and information multiple times per day but because the information doesn’t often change, they don’t take any notice. After identifying their communication problem, Jeff shared the goal of digital signage:
“Now we want [the signage] to be able to change and give different messaging and colors and images, and that's what draws people's attention."
The company needed a more dynamic and engaging way to share important safety key performance indicators (KPIs) and insights to ensure that the information was being noticed and retained by employees.
Rise Vision also makes Jeff’s job easier. Using the digital platform, he is able to spend just 15-20 minutes a month updating the content versus the company’s whiteboards which require 5 hours a month to keep up to date.
Crown Cork’s use of Rise Vision is notable for its focus on both improving safety and fostering a positive workplace culture through innovative methods such as gamification. By placing digital signage above employee time clocks, Crown Cork ensures that workers see important messages as they clock in and out, maximizing the reach and impact of their communications.
Gamification is adding game mechanics into non-game environments to increase participation.
Jeff was not part of the original decision-making process for implementing Rise Vision at Crown Cork, as it was already in place when he joined. However, he quickly recognized the value it brought to the table. The digital signage platform allowed for real-time updates and dynamic content delivery, which was exactly what Crown Cork needed to address their communication challenges.
One of the primary uses of Rise Vision at Crown Cork is to display critical safety KPIs. Jeff elaborates:
"We post metrics, some KPI data, things like how many days safe we are, or if we've had any injuries. We've had a lot of heat lately, so we'll post stuff related to heat exhaustion and awareness on it."
By consistently sharing this data, Crown Cork keeps safety at the forefront of employees' minds. The digital signage also displays monthly safety focuses sent from the corporate office, ensuring that all employees are aware of the current safety priorities.
To verify that employees are paying attention to the displayed information, Crown Cork conducts monthly safety committee meetings, incorporating a gamified element:
"We always play this little game. It’s kind of like Jeopardy. The information that I post on our message boards often has questions related to it during these meetings. This helps me ensure that they’re paying attention to the messages."
This approach not only keeps safety information fresh in employees' minds but also makes learning about safety engaging and interactive. There’s also scientific evidence that shows there’s a strong positive correlation between successful health and safety programs and preventing occupational injuries.
Crown Cork also uses Rise Vision to enhance workplace culture by sharing information about employee milestones and events, thereby creating a sense of community and belonging. Jeff shared:
"We use it to post retirement parties, employee anniversaries, and other events. It’s a great communication tool for these kinds of messages."
In addition, the company plans to expand the use of Rise Vision to include quality and production metrics. This will provide employees with a comprehensive view of the company's performance and their role in its success, further boosting engagement and morale.
According to a study conducted by Gallup and Workhuman, 80% of employees report being more productive when recognition and rewards are utilized to motivate them.
